Through a glass darkly...
1/f is the debut album from Immune, and it sets the bar high. In many ways Immune's sound could be compared to Tool with traces of experimental Pink Floyd, but to compare them to others only limits preconceptions of their sound. Based out of Leeds, Immune formed in early 2002 and have been running hot ever since. Their 2004 EP Elek gained them radio exposure and press worldwide and 1/f is the product of that momentum.
Surprising and deep, Immune have a rich sound that seems to take a different shape with every listen. Ask is a great opening song as it welcomes you with warm, dark tones. We then have driving songs such as Human, Monkey, and Selling Screen, evidence of Immune's ability to reach powerful musical crescendos. With the modern psychedelic Sum, with its deep grooves and great synth work, this album morphs constantly. Immune consistently combine their lyrics with an ethereal sound that deserves and requires repeated listening.
With all the new music from the UK flooding over to the States it's looking like the British Invasion Part Two. With the Artic Monkeys leading the attack and Immune not far behind, the British are coming. A tour is in the works with Pelican, Oceansize and Enablers in the UK and hopefully plans are in the making for a US appearance. Their promo flew off the tables at the All Tomorrow's Parties. All indications are looking good for Immune.
Ultimately, 1/f is an amazing debut album. In many ways these guys are way ahead of their time, although on their website they claim that their music is "timeless" and making it is both "difficult and important." Immune hope to find an audience today, and with 1/f they have a good chance of doing just that. We look forward to a US tour and more great things to come from this promising band.
